Athens with children, is that actually a fun experience? As a mother of two young children, I can answer this question with a wholehearted “yes”. Greeks love children and it shows. Restaurants are almost all child-friendly and well equipped with high chairs. You’re unlikely to get angry looks when your child spills, plays, or makes too much noise.
There are also plenty of activities that are interesting for children: archaeological sites, child-friendly museums, beautiful parks, playgrounds, theatres, and beaches. Travelling with small children? Then make sure to bring a comfortable baby carrier, because Athens is not buggy-friendly in all places.
CHILD-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES DURING YOUR CITY TRIP TO ATHENS
Travelling with children usually requires some extra preparation. This is because you’re only really on holiday when the kids are having a good time too.
Below you’ll find a list of things that are truly great to do with kids in Athens:
THE NATIONAL GARDENS
These former royal gardens are located in the heart of the city, right next to the parliament building. There is a small petting zoo, a pond with turtles, a children’s library, picnic areas, and a fantastic playground.
THE ACROPOLIS
When in Athens, a visit to the Acropolis is a must. Children love to climb and clamber over the ruins. There is plenty to see, there is room for the children to run around, and you have a fantastic view of the city.
OPEN-AIR ESCAPE ROOM
With the escape tour Athens, you will no longer be bothered by teenagers dragging their feet behind you. By carrying out the assignments in the game, you will discover the city in a unique way. With every correct answer, you receive a new clue that leads to the secret exit. Also fun to play in groups and compete against each other!
THE STAVROS NIARCHOS PARK
This huge park adjoins the cultural centre of the same name. You can enjoy a coffee here while the children play in one of the playgrounds, or, during summer, at the fountain. From the top of the cultural centre, you have a beautiful view over Athens and you can even see the islands. With the binoculars, you will have an even better view. The park is very close to the coast, so you can walk or cycle to the beach from here.
CYCLE THROUGH THE CITY WITH A TOUR GUIDE WHO SPEAKS YOUR LANGUAGE
The Let’s Meet in Athens bicycle tours are highly suitable for families with children. In the space of three hours, you cycle past the most fun and interesting places in the city with an enthusiastic tour guide who speaks English, Dutch, or German, according to your preference.
The tour guide keeps you entertained for every minute of the tour as he or she tells you about the city in an interesting and child-friendly way. Do you prefer not to cycle in a big group with your children? Then book our private tour just for your own family.
VISIT THE MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS
Near the Monastiraki Square, you will find the Museum of Illusions. Nothing is as it seems in this museum. Defy gravity in the reverse room or reduce yourself to miniature size. You are allowed to take photos in this museum, so make sure you have a good camera with you to get the best pictures!
