Shopping in Athens is definitely worth it! You will find wide shopping streets with well-known chain stores, but also large covered market halls for meat and fish, a fruit and vegetable market, local delicatessen stores, antique markets and chic neighborhoods with expensive boutiques.

As a tourist you are often only in the city for a few days and it is not easy to find the nicest addresses. That’s why we want to share a few with you here.

Shopping in Athens around the Varvakeio market

Varvakeio market and the streets around it are a paradise for lovers of good food. You will discover the real Athens at the market, among the locals. Here you will find the best souvenirs such as local herbs, olive soaps, honey and traditional pastourma. In this neighborhood you will find Evripidou street, our personal favorite. At number 31 you’ll find Baxar, Athens’ most famous spice store, where they sell a wealth of herbs, dried aromatic plants, legumes, different types of rice, flour and much more. All products are sold from traditional bags displayed on the floor. The look of the store, the smells released and the long lines on Saturday mornings make Baxar a real attraction.

Also don’t skip Miran (Evripidou 45) when you are at Evripdou. Miran is known for its Pastrami and Soutzouki but also sells other products, mostly from local small farmers from Greece. The store immediately stands out because it is completely full of plastic sausages and pieces of Pastrami. The history of this store dates back to the year 1922 when it was founded by an Armenian family. The store has expanded but still offers the quality of years ago.

Shopping in Athens

Kolonaki

Kolonaki is the most upscale neighborhood in Athens. Here you can store at the famous brands such as Prada and Louis Vouitton, but you will also find smaller and hip boutiques. The Greek brand APIVITA has opened its biggest and most special store here; the APIVITA concept store. The Neoclassical building housing the store embodies the unique APIVITA philosophy. Each of the 5 floors welcomes and unfolds the power of nature, the secrets and wisdom of the bee, society and the rich Greek flora as well as the Hippocrates holistic approach to health, beauty and well-being. The store combines an organic juice bar with a natural pharmacy, spa and natural hair studio.

Monastiraki antique market

Are you in Athens on a Sunday? Then visit the flea and antique market in Avyssini Square in the Monastiraki neighborhood. Here you’ll find absolutely everything! Finished shopping? Then have a coffee on one of the roof terraces in the square and enjoy the view of the Acropolis.
